Q&A: What cell phone service is cheapest for a “pay as you go” type thing?
Question by KristenCO: What cell phone service is cheapest for a “pay as you go” type thing?
I’m looking for the cheapest possible cell phone plan. I live in an area that has no coverage, so it’s mostly for when I go to town… if I’m lost, need to call my husband to see if he needs something from the store, etc. I want something for emergencies, and maybe a little more. I won’t use it everyday, but maybe three days a week, for a couple minutes each day. Some “pay as you go” plans seem outrageous – $ 1 per day you use it, plus 25 cents per minute. And, you have to have a minimum amount on your phone, and it doesn’t roll over the next month if you don’t use it. Is there a better plan out there?

Well first off, no pay as you go plan rolls over to the next month. For instance virgin mobile, you have to put $ 20 on it at least every 3 months to keep it going. The $ 1 per day you use it I have never heard of, but the 25 cents per minute I have heard of and ya that would be the best think to do is if you arent really gonna use it.

I’d recommend Virgin Mobile. That’s what I got for my father who also has very minimal need for a cell phone. The rate is 18 cents a min, no free night and weekend minutes, but no daily or monthly charge. The amount stays in your account until used up, so you can consider it a type of rollover.
Two things to keep in mind though: First, as Mike above said, you have to add at least $ 20 every 3 months, even if you still have money in your account. But if you set up automatic “top up” with your credit card, they give you a $ 5 discount, so it comes out to $ 15 every 3 months or $ 60 a year if you don’t use at all. That doesn’t seem to be a problem for you.
The other thing is that Virgin Mobile uses the Sprint network which is spotty in some places. Ask around to see how good Sprint is where you live before you sign up.
Here is a good site where they compare pre-paid rates: http://www.cellguru.net/prepaid_compare.htm

this is NOT a pay as you go but it is a NO CONTRACT/NO DEPOSIT/NO CREDIT CHECK/
you can cancel anytime by just not paying the next month and you get a free phone!!!! It is MUCH better that pre paid and free nights and weekends and mobile to mobile and other stuff
