How does “pay-as-you-go” work for cell phones?

Question by *: How does “pay-as-you-go” work for cell phones?
Make sure your answer is detailed. I want to know exactly how it works. I’ve never owned a cell phone before, so I have no idea. Do minutes ever expire? If you have no minutes, can your phone still recieve incoming calls? If someone else phones you, does that conversation still use up minutes? What about text messaging? What about long-distance phone calls? Are long-distance text messages any different than local text-messages? Are there any special Sunday rates?

Please describe everything in detail — I’m completely clueless.
My phone will not be for every day chatting, it will be for three minute conversations about where we are going to meet, and emergencies.

that means that you buy your minutes like 10 cents per minute and then when you run out you have to buy more

Q&A: Pay-as-you-go cell phones? Please help!!?

Question by Alison: Pay-as-you-go cell phones? Please help!!?
I’m looking for a pay-as-you-go cell phone that doesn’t require you to pay per month. I’m in high school and I pay for my cell phone minutes on my own. I need a prepaid cell phone provider that has good service and gives you more “bang for your buck”. I’ve had TracFone for a few years and it’s crap!!! They have horrible service and it’s REALLY expensive! What provider is best for me – and cheap? Thanks!

Can someone use my old cell phone and purchase a pay-as-you-go plan to go with it?

Question by RD: Can someone use my old cell phone and purchase a pay-as-you-go plan to go with it?
Hi, I know barely anything about cell phones/cell phone plans. I am a member of my mom’s plan which has as many people as there are allowed to be.
My dad now wants a cell phone to use pretty much for work related calls, so he needs a very basic plan. Both my mom and I have old cell phones because we got new ones for free when we changed plans. Is there any way to get my dad a pay-as-you-go plan but let him use my old phone so we don’t have to spend money on a new one?
Thank you!

Yes almost any carrier will let you do this as long as the phone is gps capeable (able to call 911 and be found if you get cut off and pretty much any phone that is about 4 years old or newer is.) or you can even take it to verizon and do a month to month plan which is a post pay service without a contract (but it does have to be a verizon phone though) the reason this could be better is sometimes prepay can get expensive especially if the person using it isnt using it a whole lot.

Q&A: Can an LG Shine, slider cell phone without an SIM card (unlocked) be used as an AT&T pay-as-you-go phone?

Question by Ashton C: Can an LG Shine, slider cell phone without an SIM card (unlocked) be used as an AT&T pay-as-you-go phone?
The LG Shine (slider cell phone) has been a phone that I have wanted for a while. But, unfortunately, the phone is only avalible with a plan. I need to know that if I buy an unlocked (without an SIM card) LG Shine that I can set it up as an AT&T pay-as-you-go Phone or if they will reject it and only allow me to set it up as a plan phone. Please help me with my problem, I really need to know this before I waste $ 300 on an unlocked LG Shine. Thank you for those who help.
