Yes you can. I bought a t-mobile strip and just put my sim in. works great.
As long as it’s the same company ie T-mobile or AT&T.

We have a contact with verizon wireless that expires in June and I was wondering what would be better for me, getting a phone with a contract or getting a pre-paid phone. My parents want to stay with verison though, do they have pay as you go phones? and is it more expensive to text on go-phones than phones with contracts?
