Question by *: How does “pay-as-you-go” work for cell phones?
Make sure your answer is detailed. I want to know exactly how it works. I’ve never owned a cell phone before, so I have no idea. Do minutes ever expire? If you have no minutes, can your phone still recieve incoming calls? If someone else phones you, does that conversation still use up minutes? What about text messaging? What about long-distance phone calls? Are long-distance text messages any different than local text-messages? Are there any special Sunday rates?
Please describe everything in detail — I’m completely clueless.
My phone will not be for every day chatting, it will be for three minute conversations about where we are going to meet, and emergencies.

that means that you buy your minutes like 10 cents per minute and then when you run out you have to buy more

You must have a minimum of a tri-band phone to work in the US / Canada, UK uses dual band, and is moving up to the tri-band, a good UK company thats up to date, would be the 3 network, but basically it’s a matter of the phone, not the company so much, O2 works well in various countries, the have whats called roaming accounts with foriegn networks, that supply you services when in thier country to your home network.
But just ask any decent phone shop in regards to the phone and it’s availability to use in other countries, or look for the TRI-Band status that will work, otherwise, considering the huge cost of using a roaming pay as you go, just get a pay as you go sim in the country you’ll be in, much cheaper, (still need a tri-band phone for this, or buy a pay as you go while abroad, somewhat more exspensive, and although it will work in this country on return (get a UK payg sim on return), for chargers and the like, better a UK phone in the first instance, unless your going to be in a foriegn country for a long time.
P.s., watch the chargers and mobile phones, the different frequency the electricity is on in each country buggers up the phones when using an adapter, and in some cases won’t charge at all, so maybe best to get the phone and charger from the country your in????

1. How do they work?
2. Do you have to get service to work them?
3. Do you get text/free evenings & weekends type deals with them?

1they work by getting a prepaid card (10$ 15$ etc) and each minute/day/text cost you so much.
2 this question is a little confussing, you go through a carrier yes. and you have to have cell service yes. but there are no contracts or anything you walk into walmart get the phone load the card on to it and start using it.
3. not that i know of. i know that if you pay a dollar a day at&t will give you mobile to mobile
4. i have seen the GO Phone (at&t) at walmart for as low as 10$ and the great thing about at&t is you can use anyphone they have just move your sims

Im 15 in 11th grade in Canada. I recently got a job and i think now that i want to get a cell phone and kinda need it. I’m making my own money, so i’m gonna pay for my own phone. My parents want nothing to do with the bill of the cell phone because they find that the companies steal your money which ends up being a waiste of money. So what’s better?? being on a contract or pay as you go??? I heard that pay has you go is better because you wont have a massive bill to pay evry month and people are not on your ass for money??

My perfect phone would be: text messaging free, free incoming calls, after 6pm to a certain time its free (free evenings i guess) free on weekends. Tell me deals like this exist lol. And remember, i dont wanna be paying like more then 40 bucks for the phone and if i find like a good deal, its going to be my first time getting a cell. So plz tell me has much as you know, all the info!!!!

You pay and use it up then pay more.

Kind of. Most carriers will let you add units (minutes, whatever) and with each addition, your activation time is extended, usually up to one full year.
Does texting take minutes offf???
Usually, although this would be a fraction of a minute, or look for someone who provides a plan with bundled SMS or will put you on a monthly plan (provided you have a regular source of income, like an allowance, and you get good grades regularly)
How do the minutes work???
You might be able to find a prepaid that will let you have something with free night and weekends. You really have to shop around. Make sure you asking if there are roaming charges with any carrier you strongly consider. Roaming will typically deduct double minutes / units.

You can, but you might not have to. It could be every other month, or something less frequent. It really depends on how much you use it, what you use it for, etc. As far as a limit on how much you can put on … in some cases that would be counter-productive, due to the length of activation you would receive would be limited (typically) to one year.

They do expire. However, most allow a rollover of minutes month to month.

Yes, but the best way is to get the most minutes on one card. Buy in bulk and save money.

Either thru the internet or via the add airtime interface on the phone (in the menus), some allow you to call in and add time. It depends on the provider.

Maybe … maybe not. If you can find a provider that does a monthly plan and you have regular income …

Most providers will let you get some form of insurance for your phone, but most prepaid phones are inexpensive. Just make sure you write down all of the relevant info like the MEI / ESN / SIM card serial number so that if it happens, you can access your account.

Most providers can figure out if you have attempted to do this and there is some error on their part, seeing as how it is all computerized and there are logs of everything. Some providers, it takes a little time for the minutes to update, others, it is very fast. Depends on the provider and the service in your area.

Most providers that do contracts also do prepaid, and each carrier varies on how they do it. I know Virgin Mobile has a prepaid that will bundle 1000 txt for ~ $ 7 USD per month.

about a year ago i bought my dad a cingular pay-as-you go phone. i want to know will the sim chip work in a regular mobile phone, or are the pay as you go sim chips only compatible w/ pay as you go phones?

A friend of mine who works for a cell phone company says it does. She even advises customers who have lost their phone to use a pay as you go until a good deal comes along. I don’t know if it would work for every brand, though. Can’t hurt to try.

I don´t live in the US but travel frequently to Texas, and was planning on getting a pay as you go plan…
Is it really working? I mean, is it too expensive, what it the minimum amount if money it needs, how much will it last while not in use… etc. Anything I need to know…
